JLK
- Nothing More Than Something To Wear
Karmic Hit - **** - (A cut above the rest)
Don't
be put off by JLK's stomach-churning nude cover pose.
'Nothing More....' is the Brisbane songwriter's most
cohesive and beguiling album to date, a delicate,
unabashedly sentimental potpourri of surfer rock and
sweet acoustica. First track 'Friend Among Friends'
opens with a blaze of powerchords and builds into
the sort of effortlessly seductive chorus that lodges
in your brain for weeks. Elsewhere JLK, plain John
Kilbey to his friends
and brother of The Church's Steve - explores Byrds-esque
harmonies ('Rehash') and straightforward indie-rock
('Satisfy Me'). Upbeat but never brash, languorous
yet always coherent, 'Nothing More....' is the happiest
record you are likely to hear this year.
