Introversion
- track by track.
Maiden
Voyage -
One
of the few collaborations between JK and drummer Matt Kerr,
this song was largely autobiographical and behind a thin
allegory of adventure on the seven seas lies the journey
of the band itself. This record was made just before the
Church's Priest=Aura and echoes of this rollicking chorus
can be heard in the chanting on "The Disillusionist". Jeremy
adds some nice mandolin which he worked out how to play
on the night.
Sample
Lyric:
"And though contracts are all in accord,
We're hoping we haven't been tricked, We know a few men
were washed overboard But the rest of the crew is hand-picked.
And I wouldn't be surprised if not one of our posters was
seen, On our Maiden Voyage."
Innocent
Few -
A
popular song live which never quite got into a successful
groove for the recording. The song was mainly written by
Jeremy then picked up and sang by JK. Contains some nice
'to and fro' vocals in the chorus.
Sample
Lyric:
"The
stage was set, and such events are seldom seen, A thousand
eyes met, with nothing in between, them."
I
Can Plainly See -
The
fourth recorded version of this song although chronologically
the third. After the demo version was heard by SK he decided
to produce a recording of this song which the band enjoyed
but were never really happy with. This version is more like
the live version and is probably the definitive version.
Contains some wonderful yodeling type vocals and e-bow guitar.
This song was written in rehearsal by the band.
Sample
Lyric:
"I'm
glad to see, you haven't torn each other apart, While I
was gone, I'm sorry that I took so long, I was relaxing
in the next room...."
Assassin
-
One
of the album highlights and probably one of the most mature
songs on offer here. This is the Bhagavad's at their best.
Written in rehearsal, mainly around Adrian's bass line,
the lyrics were only recorded as they were sung. Probably
some inter-band paranoia was coming out in this, although
the finished lyrics seem mostly elusive.
Sample
Lyric :
"How was I to know, You'd keep pounding away like the waves
on the shore? How was I to know, I mentioned your name as
you walked through the door? Well that's fine by me it's
my fate you see, I have always been this way."
And
Then She is Gone -
A taste of JK's songwriting to come on the Penny Drops,
this song, based on a dream, has an intricate arrangement
which uses the guitars like a string quartet. Specifically
in the solo where Jeremy's harmonic plucking acts as counterpoint
to the bass. With its unusual time signature and involving
lyrics this is also an album highlight.
Sample
Lyric: "Do you know what she said before she left? Do you
know what she said? (This takes the cake) She said "However
far our bonds may stretch, You know that they will never
break."
No
News -
Adrian's
contribution. The playing order of this album was designed
as an inverted arch, this song, half way through the CD,
is the inverted apex of that arch. Slow and melancholy,
No News offers a moment of dreamy respite from... all the
other dreamy respites on the album. Perfectly suited to
Adrian's deep and unique voice.
Sample
Lyric: " And the words swirl around her head, Get your feet
on the ground she said, The news was not news instead, There
was no news, at all."
Just
the Thing -
As
with the Innocent Few this song never settled into the groove
it did in a live setting. Perhaps it is the sudden changes
in timing, perhaps not. Jeremy offers a tale which seems
sexual or perhaps spiritual. Has an excellent middle eight
which contains various cut up tape loops and so on.
Sample Lyric: - "Don't ask, just believe, Well I had to
agree, Don't you worry about anything, And leave it all
up to me, She's got, just the thing."
For
Your Own Good -
Another strong song named after a book by Alice Miller,
which has some of the sweetest vocals on the CD. The first
line is borrowed from Lewis Carroll's opening poem to "Through
the Looking Glass". Takes fifties guitar arpeggios and turns
them on their ears. Beautiful.
Sample
Lyric: "Child of pure unclouded brow and dreaming eyes of
wonder, I don't want to cause you despair, I don't want
to bore you either..."
There's
Still Hope For Us -
One
of the four songs redone on "Hypnotised" this more gentle
version, captures the feeling nicely. This is another great
song which remains vital today and should be sung loudly
by every drunk guy to his girlfriend.
Sample
Lyric: "Behind the shining gardens of our wintry palace,
I stand here every morning with my head in my hands, And
closing down upon the dawn, I cross a field or two and hope
to be with you."
Leaving
Early -
Another
high point. Jeremy finishes off both the album and the story
he began on their first record, "Foreverglades" with this
song which manages to be emotive without being sentimental.
Excellent lyrics, powerful performance.
Sample
Lyric: " So all we can do for you now that you're gone,
Is just keep on playing your favourite song, We'll try not
to cry as we've all done before, It won't be the same, won't
be the same, Without you in the game, anymore."
